When it comes to choosing blinds, there are two important criteria to consider: how they look (obviously!) and how successful they are at blocking the glare of the sun.
As the Met Office issue yet another yellow weather warning, those warm and sunny summer days seem an eternity away. But they’re not as far as you think! Daylight savings begin on Sunday 29th March, which means the days are only going to get longer, brighter and (hopefully!) sunnier.
Therefore, its time to starting thinking about your blinds.
While the sunny weather is much appreciated (especially after the never-ending UK storms) it can cause some problems. Sun damage to your furniture or restless nights due to the early-rising, late-setting sun can be frustrating; however, they can be easily solved with the correct style of blind.
Dim-Out Blinds
Dim-out blinds utilise sheer fabric to filter out sunlight and protect your room from harmful UV rays. However, as the name suggests, they merely ‘dim’ the light, allowing enough in that you can still see what you’re doing. Dim-out blinds range from extremely sheer material to fabric that blocks 95% of the light. Anything stronger would be classified as ‘blackout’ (see below).
Perfect for your living room, kitchen and bathroom, these blinds can be drawn for privacy or to create shade on a hot summer’s day. They also shield your room from harsh UV rays that can bleach soft furnishings and permanently discolour wooden fittings. What’s more, as they only dim the light, they still promote a bright and spacious living area.
Black-Out Blinds
Are you a light sleeper? Do you love a lazy Sunday morning in bed? Do you work night shifts and sleep during the day? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then blackout blinds are a must.
There is nothing worse than trying to sleep when the sun is glaring through your window. Especially in the summer, when the days are long and the nights last mere minutes! However, blackout blinds are the perfect solution. They prevent all light from passing through, keeping your room nice and dark and creating the perfect sleeping environment.
Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds consist of slim, flat, horizontal slats of either aluminium or wood. They can be raised or lowered, but most importantly tilted, once again offering privacy and shade from the glaring sun. You can adjust the slats to control how much light you want to enter your room.
