Did you know nearly 4.2 million Brits work from home?
As modern technology leads the way for a progressive, flexible work environment, more and more people are now choosing to work from home at a home office. With 24/7 contact with clients and colleagues, but with the bonus of lie-ins and an optional pyjamas dress code, you can definitely see the appeal!
Your home office is now a hub of activity. But no matter how long you spend there, be it a couple of hours to a full working week, it’s important that it remains an efficient space to conduct business.
Here are Dovetail Interiors top five tips to achieve the perfect home office layout.
Tip #1 | Finding the space
It may seem obvious, but make sure you allow enough space for a comfortable work environment. Take a step back, and consider the following criteria: can you stand up, sit down, and easily move across your desk?
Don’t underestimate your space—no one wants to be cramped over the desk for hours at a time! If you are unsure, use the tried-and-tested guidelines employed by professional designers: 60 inches wide by 84 inches deep.
Tip #2 | Natural lighting
If possible, choose a location with natural light. Your desk should be positioned towards the window, as this will prevent glare on your screen. If this is impossible, invest in some translucent blinds.
A view is the perfect way to instil inspiration. It relieves that cooped-up feeling many experience when they have been trapped in the office all day, and gives you eyes a rest from your computer screen. If you don’t have a view, don’t worry. Place an inspiration board above you desk instead.
Tip #3 | Choosing your desk
The next stage is to select your desk. If you have minimal space, select a desk which is small, compact and sleek. Also consider investing in a desk with built-in drawers to store your documents.
As a rule of thumb, your desk should be at least 48 inches wide. This provides a decent amount of space for your laptop, notepad, plus any other materials that are necessary to complete your work. However, if you operate solely using a laptop, you can get away with using a narrower desk. Overall, Dovetail Interiors recommend a workspace that is 60 inches wide by 28 inches high for optimum comfort.
Tip #4 | Selecting your chair
It is important to choose ergonomics over aesthetics when it comes to your office chair. Look for one with good lumbar support for the lower back, as this will go a long way to preventing back strain. An adjustable chair is also recommended, so you can adjust the height, back and arms until you feel comfortable and supported.
Tip #5 | Personalise your space!
One of the perks of working from home is YOU are in control. Customise your office so you feel more “at home”; incorporate personal touches throughout your workstation that brighten your day and provide inspiration.
These touches could be anything, from family photos to patterned wallpaper to succulents. But whatever they are, make sure it reflects your personality and promotes a pleasant work environment.
