Did you know we spend nearly 26 years per lifetime in bed?
It’s an incredible figure, which only goes to show the importance of a good bedroom. A comfortable bed, yes, but a well-considered layout can also truly make a difference. In this article, Dovetail Interiors will reveal our top tips for the perfect bedroom layout, including how to optimise your space and create the perfect sleeping conditions.
Top Tip #1 | Consider the shape and size of your room.
If your bedroom is small and narrow, you may feel your choice of layout is limited. After all, your room may hardly be big enough to squeeze in a bed! However, there are some simple hacks to fix this. Is storage a problem? Try a floating shelf to utilise your space, or a raised bed where you can store boxes underneath. And if you want your room to appear bigger, invest in a few strategically placed mirrors for the illusion of space.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the large master bedroom. Unite the space with a large rug to pull the furniture together and create a more integrated room. The bed should be positioned in the centre of the back wall, and paired with bedside tables and lamps. A dresser and chair on the opposite wall add a nice final touch.
What about extra large, long and narrow bedrooms? It’s crucial you don’t place your bed at one end of the room, this will only isolate the space. Instead, place in centrally against the long wall. With all your space, you can take advantage of a king (or even a California king) bed. Rather than bedside tables, why not invest in some large dressers to further fill your space? Finally, an extra large rug will help to tie the room together.
Top Tip #2 | Follow a good Feng Shui layout.
Feng shui is a word that’s thrown around a lot when it comes to interior design. But what does it actually mean? Well, Feng Shui the Chinese art of spatial arrangement relating to the flow of energy (otherwise know as chi). Furniture is arranged to maximise harmony between the flow of chi of the environment and the person, this is meant to affect your wealth, happiness and success.
So how should you position your bed to achieve good bedroom Feng Shui? First, your bed should be placed diagonally from your door against a solid wall. It should be grounded by good energy on both sides, for example, by a pair of bedside tables. Any other large piece of furniture, be it a chest of drawers or wardrobe, should not be placed to the side, but instead at the foot of the bed. This allows the energy in the bedroom to remain balanced.
Top Tip #3 | Good lighting is key.
You want a warm, relaxing ambience in your bedroom before going to sleep. This will help you wind down for the evening and achieve a good night’s rest. Bedside lighting is a good choice, but there are a few things to consider.
First, the height of the lampshade in relation to your eye level. After all, the last thing you want is a glare from the bulb when you are lying in bed! Take into account the height of the bed and its bedside tables, as well as the height of the lamps themselves. Second, look for switches that can be easily accessed from your bed. Lamps with switches on the cables often work best, as this minimises the awkward stretching in the night to find the switch.
